Often described as the hydration hero, Hyaluronic Acid is the key to plumped, smoother skin regardless of your age, and the go to ingredient for many dermatologists.
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic Acid is a molecule naturally found in your body, predominantly in your skin, eyes, and connective tissue. It retains water molecules, helping hydrate and moisturise the skin – it can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water.
How hyaluronic acid works
Suitable for all skin types, including oily and sensitive, Hyaluronic Acid (also known as sodium hyaluronate), gives your skin an immediate boost of hydration. It helps repair the skin barrier, thus boosting protection and preventing inflammation which can cause skin ageing. It also helps regulate water transport within the skin.
Why do we need hyaluronic acid in skincare?
You may wonder, if we already naturally produce it, why do we need it in our skincare too?
Whilst it is produced by the body, you naturally lose up to half of it every day due to natural skin turnover. Additionally, internal, and external stress factors such as inflammation and sun exposure can also contribute to decreasing levels in the skin. As we age, it is not replaced as quickly as in younger skin. Hyaluronic Acid is a key player in plumped, hydrated skin – the less you have, the more likely your skin will lose its glow and smoothness. Therefore, by choosing skincare where it is a key ingredient, you can help top up the lost levels.
Nausheen Qureshi, award-winning skincare formulator explains,
‘Hyaluronic acid is an incredible humectant, pulling water to itself to keep the skin well-hydrated. Water loss and dehydration is a leading cause of dull skin and fine lines and by adding humectants to our skin care regime, we can keep our skin plump and hydrated.
Hyaluronic acid pulls more water to itself than other humectants such as aloe vera which is why it’s the humectant of choice for many brands. In Wild Beauty from Rhug Estate products it is used to attract water and therefore hydration to the outermost layer of the skin, drawing water from the environment.
This is why it’s a superstar ingredient for the spring and summer months, when there is more moisture in the air around us for it to work more effectively.’
Is all Hyaluronic Acid the same?
The short answer to this is no, as Hyaluronic Acid comes in different weights (molecule size). The molecular size determines its depth of delivery in the skin – the larger the weight (molecule) the harder it is for it to penetrate the skin.
It is important that it can be absorbed into the skin to work at its optimum capacity, otherwise it will just sit on the skin’s surface. Whilst you would see immediate hydration, it wouldn’t have as lasting an effect.
Where to use Hyaluronic Acid in a skincare routine
Wild Beauty from Rhug Estate formulated its Active Treatment Serum with Hyaluronic Acid so that it can be used immediately after cleansing and before your day or night cream to deliver its carefully chosen skincare actives to the skin. We have used low molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid within the formula for maximum, lasting hydration, in any season.
Many skincare experts recommend applying it to slightly damp skin before applying a moisturiser on top, as this will help seal in the water provided by this effective hydrator. In the case of our serum, we recommend applying 2-3 drops directly on to the face and décolleté, massaging it in gently.
How will a Hyaluronic Acid Serum benefit my skin?
Wild Beauty’s Active Treatment Serum with Hyaluronic Acid will help restore a more hydrated, youthful looking skin. Skin will appear smoother and plumped.
