Why Dry Body Brushing Should Be Part of Your Daily Routine
October 10, 2023 Posted by Alaw Evans

Dry body brushing has been practised for centuries - rooted in Ayurvedic tradition, originating in India, where it is known as garshana - and it remains one of the most consistently recommended body care rituals for good reason. Unlike many wellness trends, the benefits are well documented and the technique is remarkably simple.
Here's what you need to know.

What is dry body brushing?
Dry body brushing involves using a natural bristle brush on dry skin, before bathing, to exfoliate and stimulate the body. It takes around three to five minutes and the results are immediately noticeable; skin feels smoother, more energised and visibly more radiant after just one session.
It should always be done on dry skin, before you shower or bathe, not in the shower
itself. The technique is most effective on dry skin, and hot water can reduce the exfoliating benefits.
The benefits of dry body brushing
Exfoliation and smoother skin The most immediate benefit is physical exfoliation. The bristles gently remove dead skin cells from the surface, unclogging pores and revealing smoother, brighter skin beneath. Regular dry body brushing can also help reduce the appearance of keratosis pilaris, commonly known as strawberry legs or chicken skin, by clearing the build-up around hair follicles. It can also help prevent ingrown hairs, particularly useful if you wax or shave.
Improved circulation The brushing motion increases blood flow to the surface of the skin, which is why skin feels warm, energised and visibly more radiant after a session. Improved microcirculation supports the skin's natural renewal process and contributes to a healthy, lasting glow.

Lymphatic support The lymphatic system removes waste from the body's tissues but, unlike the cardiovascular system, has no pump of its own, it relies on movement and stimulation to flow effectively. Dry brushing is one of the most accessible ways to support that process naturally, which is why it has long been associated with a genuine sense of wellbeing beyond improved skin.
Enhanced product absorption By removing the build-up of dead skin cells, dry brushing prepares the skin to absorb everything that follows far more effectively. Applying a body oil immediately after brushing, when skin is warm and freshly exfoliated, allows it to penetrate more deeply and work more effectively. This is the most important step to follow your brush with.
Who should avoid dry body brushing?
Dry body brushing is not suitable for everyone. If you have particularly sensitive or inflamed skin, eczema, psoriasis or any open wounds, it is best to avoid dry brushing to prevent further irritation. If you are unsure, speak to a dermatologist before introducing it into your routine. Dry brushing should never be used on the face, where skin is more delicate and sensitive.
How to dry brush - step by step
Always dry brush on dry skin, before bathing. Starting at the feet, use firm but gentle strokes, always moving upwards towards the heart to support lymphatic flow. It should never feel painful, if it does, reduce the pressure.
- Begin at the feet and brush upwards along the legs using long, sweeping strokes.
- Move to the stomach, brushing in gentle circular motions.
- Brush each arm upwards from the wrist towards the shoulder.
- Move across the chest towards the heart.
- Step into the shower to rinse away loosened skin cells.
- Pat skin dry and apply a nourishing body oil immediately - this is when absorption is at its best
How to care for your body brush
After each use, rinse the bristles thoroughly and leave to dry naturally in a well-ventilated space. Every couple of weeks, clean more thoroughly - work a small drop of gentle soap into the bristles with a damp hand, rinse well under running water, then dry bristle-side down on a clean towel. Avoid soaking the wooden handle as this can cause it to split over time.
