What the Warm Weather Is Really Doing to Your Skin - And How to Help It
October 10, 2023 Posted by Alaw Evans

As the warmer months arrive and we spend more time outdoors, most of us think about sun cream and staying cool. But fewer people think about what heat, UV exposure and the changing environment are actually doing to their skin. Here's what the science says - and what your routine needs from spring through summer.
The dehydration paradox
One of the most common misconceptions about warm weather is that sweating keeps skin hydrated. It doesn't. Although sweating makes skin feel moist, it actually accelerates water loss, a process known clinically as transepidermal water loss (TEWL). The result is skin that becomes progressively more dehydrated the more time you spend outdoors, even on days that don't feel particularly hot.
What UV exposure does to your skin barrier
Your skin's barrier keeps moisture in and environmental aggressors out. UV exposure can weaken that barrier over time, leaving skin more vulnerable to dryness and sensitivity. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that an impaired skin barrier cannot hold onto moisture as effectively, compounding the dehydration problem further.
Protecting your skin with an appropriate SPF is important during sunny periods. What you use alongside that matters equally, keeping skin hydrated and nourished supports its natural balance throughout the day.
The air conditioning effect
Stepping into a cool, air-conditioned space might feel like relief, but air conditioning draws humidity from the air, and moisture from your skin in the process. The combination of outdoor heat, UV exposure and dry indoor environments creates a cycle of moisture loss most people don't account for.
What your face needs
Cleanse gently. Warmer weather means more sebum, sweat and environmental residue on the skin's surface. Our Purifying Cleansing Lotion with Dandelion uses organic papaya enzymes to cleanse without stripping the skin's natural barrier.
Rebalance and soothe. Our Rebalancing Skin Tonic with Meadowsweet is naturally anti-inflammatory, with aloe vera and cucumber extract, calming and rebalancing for skin exposed to heat and environmental aggressors.
Replenish moisture. Hyaluronic acid draws moisture into the skin and holds it there. Our Active Treatment Serum is lightweight and fast-absorbing, ideal during warmer months when heavier products feel uncomfortable.
Restore overnight. Our Restorative Overnight Cream with Evening Primrose is rich in omega 3 and 6 to support your skin's hydration barrier while you sleep.
What your body needs
The skin on your body needs just as much attention in summer, and it's often the most overlooked part of a warm weather routine.
Brush before your shower. Our Smoothing Body Brush removes the build-up of sweat, sunscreen and dead skin cells, leaving skin properly clean and ready to absorb everything that follows.
Scrub once or twice a week. Our Exfoliating Body Scrub with Rosemary & Rhug Honey, formulated with organic sugar and Rhug honey, keeps skin smooth and bright.
Hydrate with oil. Applied immediately after your shower to slightly warm skin, our Hydrating Body Oil with Wildflowers locks moisture in before it evaporates. Wild foraged sorrel, horsetail and plantain from the Rhug Estate, blended with argan, sweet almond and sunflower oils - fast-absorbing, no residue.
Nourish where needed. Our Nourishing Body Cream provides an extra layer of hydration for drier areas, or on days when skin needs a little more.
Warm weather asks more of your skin than cooler months do. A routine that accounts for that doesn't need to be complicated. Wild foraged ingredients, honestly formulated, chosen for what your skin actually needs. That's always been the point at Wild Beauty. 🌿
