While the rest of the world waits until February 14th to get all misty-eyed, here in the Welsh valleys, we like to get a head start. On 25th January, we celebrate Dydd Santes Dwynwen, the day of the Welsh Patron Saint of Lovers.
If you thought Romeo and Juliet had it tough, or that modern dating apps are a bit of a nightmare, you’re in for a treat. Dwynwen’s story is a 5th-century rollercoaster that makes Love Island look like a quiet afternoon tea.
Dwynwen was born in the breathtaking Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (the Brecon Beacons), she was a princess and one of the 24 daughters of King Brychan Brycheiniog. As the "Juliet Capulet" of Wales, Dwynwen fell head-over-heels for a young man named Maelon Dafodrill. It was all very romantic until her father, the King, stepped in as he’d already arranged for her to marry someone else.
A Potion, A Wish, and a Block of Ice
The story takes a bit of a chilly turn here. When Maelon found out they couldn't marry, he didn't take it well. Heartbroken and fleeing into the woods, Dwynwen prayed for a way to forget her sorrow. An angel arrived with a potion designed to erase her memories of Maelon. The catch? The potion also turned poor Maelon into a solid block of ice! Horrified, Dwynwen was granted three wishes: 1. That Maelon be thawed out (she was kind like that). 2. That she would never have to marry, dedicating her life to helping others. 3. That God would grant the dreams of all true lovers.
From Agony Aunt to Llanddwyn Island
Dwynwen eventually retreated to the ruggedly beautiful Ynys Llanddwyn (Llanddwyn Island) off the coast of Anglesey. She founded a church and became the ultimate "agony aunt" for the 5th century. Legend has it there was even a sacred fish in the well there that could predict the success of your relationship based on how it flicked its fins!
The Rhug Connection: Wild Beauty for Modern Lovers
You might wonder how a 5th-century saint connects to your favourite organic skincare. The answer is written in the landscape. Dwynwen’s story is rooted in the woods and the wild coastlines of Wales, the very same environments where we forage for our ingredients.
How do we celebrate today? Some Welsh lovers exchange hand-carved love spoons. Additionally, we think a gift of Rhug Wild Beauty is the ultimate modern love token. It’s a sustainable, thoughtful way to say "I care about you (and the planet)."
Dwynwen’s life was about devotion. We believe skincare should be too! Our Protecting Facial Oil isn't just a product, it’s a daily ritual of self-love that lets you reconnect with the wild spirit of Wales. Dwynwen found peace in nature. We find our "skin-saviours" there. Our Deep Cleansing Balm, bursting with wild-foraged berries, is a tribute to the healing treasures of the estate.
How to Celebrate St Dwynwen’s Day
Whether you’re Welsh by birth or just a lover of a good story, January 25th is the perfect excuse to celebrate love in all its forms; friendship, romance, and most importantly, self-care.
Light a Rhug Luxury Candle, apply a Replenishing Mask, and remember Dwynwen’s golden rule: “Nothing wins hearts like cheerfulness.”
